SCAR TREATMENT AND RECOVERY

SCAR THERAPY TREATMENT

Enhance scar mobility and appearance. Improve tissue healing and reduce discomfort.

FAQ   CLIENTS

What is Scar Therapy

Scar therapy is a gentle, hands-on treatment that helps improve the appearance, mobility, and comfort of scar tissue. It can reduce tightness, sensitivity, pain, and improve function in the surrounding area.

What types of scars can be treated?

We treat all types of scars, including:

  • Surgical scars (e.g. mastectomy, lumpectomy, C-section, joint replacement, abdominal surgery, plastic surgery )

  • Injury or trauma scars

  • Burns

  • Keyhole or laparoscopic scars

  • Radiotherapy fibrosis

Scars can benefit from treatment early after surgery or injury, but also decades later.

How soon can I start scar therapy after surgery?

You can start scar therapy as soon as your healthcare provider gives you the green light. We recommend starting the therapy as early as possible for optimal results, in most cases the gentle short treatment sessions can start as soon as the wound is fully closed with no scabbing, oozing or symptoms of infection.

Are the therapy sessions painful?

Our therapy sessions are designed to be gentle and non-invasive. Scar therapy should never be painful. The techniques used are adapted to suit your comfort and the sensitivity of your scar.

How many sessions will I need, and how often?

Some people feel noticeable changes after one session – such as reduced tightness or improved movement – while others may benefit from multiple treatments over time.

The therapist will assess and propose a treatment plan. The treatment plan will depend on the scar’s age, size, location, depth; symptoms (pain, restricted movement) and your goals. For example, a small scar might require 2‑3 sessions; more complex or older scars might need more.

What will happen in a session?

  • Assessment: talking about history, what you’re concerned about, how the scar affects you

  • Hands‑on treatment: massage, fascial release, addressing internal adhesions etc.

  • Advice for self‑care/home work (massage, movement, possible topical products)

  • If appropriate physiotherapy intervention that may include exercise prescription, hydrotherapy, electrotherapy

When is the scar therapy not suitable?

Contraindications include: open or infected wounds, certain medical conditions, recent radiotherapy, pregnacy (for scars on torso), situations where your surgeon or GP asks you to wait. It is important to always share full medical history.

What should I wear / bring to the appointment?

  • Loose, comfortable clothing
  • any prior medical/surgical records or photographs of the scar if possible
  • any cream/products you already use.

What is the cost of a Scar Therapy session?

The initial session is 60 minutes long and costs €85.

Follow up sessions may vary depending on the treatment plan between €60 for 30 minutes session to €120 for 90 minutes session.

Most major private health insurance providers in Ireland reimburse the sessions under your physiotherapy benefit, providing you have cover for physiotherapy.
